About Waterloo

Waterloo is situated about waterloo ontarioan hour East of London and one hour West of Toronto in Southwestern Ontario.

The population according to the latest census (2006) was 97,475.   Waterloo is part of The Regional Municipality of Waterloo which also includes the cities of Kitchener and Cambridge, and the townships of Wellesley, Woolwich, Wilmot, and North Dumfries.

Waterloo is an internationally recognized hub for technology and innovation and is home for many leading high tech companies.  This dynamic community has a strong economic base and is home to The University of Waterloo and Wilfred Laurier University.

Waterloo offers many points of interest including The Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery, the Waterloo-St. Jacob’s Railway, many parks and trails, theatres, great shopping and fantastic dining experiences. Visitors can also discover local Mennonite culture by visiting the small towns of St. Jacobs and Elmira that lie just north of Waterloo or by going on a trolley tour of a local Mennonite farm.

Waterloo Park is located in Uptown Waterloo, and contains a bandshell, animals, playgrounds and a large splash pad.  During the holiday season it’s a popular place to visit due to the beautiful light displays called "Wonders of Winter".

Waterloo plays host to many festivals including Jazz, Quilts, Buskers, Country music and a winter uptown festival.  The most exciting festival that draws the largest visitor numbers would be Oktoberfest.  It’s the largest Bavarian festival in North America and includes the biggest Thanksgiving Day Parade in Canada!

The population of Waterloo region is increasing and an exciting future lies ahead.  To help contribute to a prosperous future, the region is implementing light rail transit which features electric trains running along tracks separate from regular traffic.
